WALLPAPER
How long is a standard roll of wallpaper?
The length of a roll of our wallpaper 10.05 metres (11 yards) with a standard width of 52cm, unless otherwise stated.
Do you recommend using lining paper?
Yes, we recommend using a good quality lining paper to cross line the walls; this gives an excellent surface on which to hang wallpaper. Our Lining Paper is a lightweight paper, perfect for old and newly plastered walls.
What do the different ‘pattern matches’ mean?
‘Half Drop’ repeat is where every other horizontal repeat (from side to side) is dropped down one half of its length, i.e. the design repeats itself on the diagonal rather than the horizontal axis. ‘Straight Match’ is where the pattern repeats across the roll and is positioned at the same place at each selvedge. ‘Random Match’ or ‘Free match’ is where there are no pattern match points evident. 'Reverse Hang' alternate lengths, is where you hang every second (alternate) length upside down
Are there any specific hanging instructions for your wallpapers?
Hanging instructions are sent with every roll of wallpaper. We recommend that your decorator reads these instructions fully before starting to hang the wallpaper.
Are your wallcoverings manufactured with sustainable material?
All our wallpapers are sourced from environmentally responsible suppliers and manufactured in our British factory, Anstey Wallpaper Company, part of Sanderson Design Group.
Are Sanderson Design Group’s wallpapers FSC™ certified?

What is the area covered by a wide width wallcovering?
There are two different widths of wide wallcovering: Rolls which cover an area of 6.89sqm (74.16sqft) per roll Rolls which cover an area of 13.78sqm (148.32sqft) per roll The exact width of each wallcovering is specified in the Product Details table on each product page.
What is the area covered by a standard width wallpaper?
Our standard wallpaper rolls cover an area of 5.23sqm (56.3sqft). Please use the wallpaper calculator to check how many rolls you may need.
How can I work out how many metres of the ‘sold by the metre’ wallpaper I need to order? Is there a calculator I can use?
Step 1) Firstly, you’ll need to work out the number of drops required. You can do this by dividing the width of the walls by the width of the wallpaper roll and rounding up to the next whole decimal. For example: If the width of the wall was 300cm and the width of the wallpaper roll was 139cm then 300÷139= 2.15, which, rounded up, makes 3 drops of wallpaper. Step 2) Then, you’ll need to work out the lengths of the drop required. To do this, add the height of the wall to the height of the pattern repeat of the wallpaper before rounding up to the next whole decimal metre. For example: if the height of the wall was 300cm and the height of the wallpaper’s repeat was 96.1cm then 300+96.1= 396.1cm which, rounded up, makes 4m. NOTE: if the wallpaper has no repeat, then simply use the height of the wall, which in the example above is 300cm or 3m. Step 3) Multiply the number of drops (step 1) by the number of repeats (step 2):- Following the above example, this is 3x4 = 12 Add 5% onto this figure to allow for trimming and then round up to the next full metre. The final figure will be the amount of wallpaper you require. 12+0.6= 12.6 which, rounded up, makes 13m to be ordered. Where the product is also a ‘sold by the pattern repeat’ wallpaper, divide the total amount of metres to be ordered (as per the calculation above) by multiples of the pattern repeat. For example, 13m divided by a sold by the pattern repeat’s repeat of 1.33m will work out to at 9.77 multiples and so this figure must be rounded up to the next full repeat, meaning that 10 repeats of 1.33m are needed. This calculator provides an approximate qty recommendation only. Sanderson Design Group advise that you always consult your decorator before ordering wallpaper as we cannot be held responsible for any incorrect quantities of wallpaper ordered.
Can your wallpapers be recycled?
Our substrates are responsibly sourced, however once printed none of our wallcoverings are currently recyclable.
What is the reason for extra space within an untrimmed wallpaper/panel?
All untrimmed panels are supplied on one consistent roll length of 13.35m, which consists of 4 X 300cm panels. The extra 1.35mts is space for the roll wrap, hanging instructions and white space allowance for trimming.
Can your wallpapers be hung onto lime-plastered walls?
Lime plaster/render are commonly located in older properties. Where there is a risk of moisture being present, we would advise on sealing the wall, otherwise this moisture would most likely attack the wallpaper over time. There should be no problem hanging wallpaper over the sealed walls, especially if the walls are then cross lined to give the wallpaper a good key to hang onto. Although our non-woven wallpapers are considered more 'breathable', as soon as any paste is applied to a paper it can act as a barrier. We would therefore advise the preparation steps are followed as above and the room is kept well ventilated. We would also advise the avoidance of any vinyl wallcoverings as these have a Poly Vinyl Chloride layer to them which can also act as a barrier and discourage breathability in an older property.
Are your wallpapers suitable for use in a bathroom? Is there a varnish/finish that can be applied to help seal it?
We would recommend that one of our vinyl wallpapers are used in a bathroom or kitchen as this achieves a 'scrubbable' finish and protects the paper from water splashes. However, if you wish to use a standard or non-woven paper, this can be used with sufficient surface preparation and the application of a surface sealant/varnish. A product we have tried and tested is Polyvine Acrylic Sealant/Varnish. This is a clear varnish which is applied to the top of the paper to protect it and make it more durable. We would always recommend that a small area is tested first to ensure there is no drastic shade change to the wallpaper. We would never recommend hanging the paper in an area which would come directly into contact with water splashes, i.e., behind a sink or shower. We would also advise on keeping the room as well ventilated as possible to avoid damp and mildew and to never hang wallpaper over a damp wall.
The print on my surface printed wallpaper seems to have a ‘smudged’ appearance, is this is a fault?
Surface prints are printed using a “wet on wet” ink printing process whereby one ink goes down shortly after the previous coloured ink. This means that one colour has little time to dry before the next ink is printed beside it. However, this isn’t a fault, and is part of the beautiful irregularities of traditional surface printing.
What do you recommend for wallpaper joins and dark ground papers with un-dusted edges to reduce the white edges?
To reduce white edges showing when hanging dark coloured paper, it is recommended that a water-soluble crayon of the appropriate shade be used to colour the edge of the roll whilst in dry roll form prior to pasting/hanging. We can recommend the use of the Caran D'ache crayon, selecting the nearest colour to the chosen paper’s background. The crayon is available in all good art shops and online. These crayons can also be used where shrink back has occurred in order to help reduce the visibility of the joins.
What paste do you recommend for use with your wallpapers?
We would highly recommend the use of one of our branded pastes as these have been specially formulated to provide the best adhesion when used in conjunction with our wallpapers. However, any starch based, light, ready mixed adhesive would be suitable for our papers.
What is the shelf life of your branded pastes?
Providing the paste is stored unopened, in its original container, in dry conditions and away from frost, it should last around 2-3 years. However, once opened, the shelf life can vary as this can depend on how clean the tools were when the product was last used. The dirtier the tools the shorter the life as there is a higher chance of contamination. Generally, you should be able to tell when paste has gone off as it will have an unpleasant odour.
How much paste will I need for my wallpaper?
A 5kg tub of ready mixed light paste with no added water covers approx. 31.2m2, however this will change depending upon porosity of wall and substrate and so is merely a rough guide. This would be sufficient for: 5 x 520mm wide 10m rolls 4 x 686mm wide 10m rolls 7 x 3m 1.4m wide panels
Is thinning required?
Thinning is not recommended when using our paste unless you’re sizing a porous wall.
Do your pastes contain fungicides?
We do not add any fungicides to our paste, although they do contain in-container preservatives for shelf life purposes.
FABRIC
What do the different ‘pattern matches’ mean?
‘Half Drop’ repeat is where every other horizontal repeat (from side to side) is dropped down one half of its length, i.e. the design repeats itself on the diagonal rather than the horizontal axis. ‘Straight Match’ is where the pattern repeats across the full width of the fabric and is positioned at the same place at each selvedge. ‘Random Match’ is where there is no pattern match.
What does the term ‘railroaded’ mean?
Railroaded is the term used for fabric patterns/designs that are printed or woven across the width of the fabric, instead of vertically down the length of the fabric. Normally, fabrics are printed or woven so the design runs vertically through the length of the fabric. By railroading the pattern/design it is turned 90 degrees to enable the width (selvedge to selvedge) to be used as the drop. The benefit of railroading wide width fabrics is that any width of curtain can be made without the need for joining multiple widths. Noting that the maximum drop will be the width of the fabric less an allowance for the header and hem.
What does ‘Martindale Abrasion’ mean?
The Martindale Abrasion Test is the measure of the wear on the surface of a fabric or textile while rubbing it with another material. The results of this test contribute to the assessment of the “End Usage” suitability of a fabric. The Martindale abrasion test takes a sample of the fabric and rubs it against an abrasive material, undergoing several assessments. The test is stopped when the specified number of threads are broken, or sufficient pile is removed from a velvet. The end point results are shown in 000’s rubs. The higher the result the better the durability. The British classification standard BS2543:2004 for upholstery fabrics, specifies the criteria for end usage i.e., Occasional domestic upholstery through to Severe Contract upholstery as below:
How are wide width fabrics shipped?
Orders exceeding 20m of wide width fabric will be dispatched on 3m wide poles.
Do the fire treated properties of a fabric reduce with cleaning? How would you recommend cleaning fire treated fabric?
When we treat here in the UK for upholstery or drapery standards, the fabric should be maintained by dry cleaning. The FR treatment is guaranteed for four years, or 5 dry cleans, whichever is the sooner. For fixed upholstery, we would recommend a professional upholstery dry cleaner to visit in situ. Where this is not possible, we recommend the below: Vacuum regularly to prevent the build-up of dirt. (build-up of dirt can reduce the effectiveness of the stain resist). For spillages - wipe clean using a microfiber cloth or sponge with warm water taking care not to damage the fabric surface. For more stubborn stains use mild soap solution but ensure you rinse thoroughly leaving no soap residue.
Can your fabrics be used in a bathroom?
Due to moisture that may be present within a bathroom, we would suggest that a machine washable fabric is selected for this use.
PAINT
Should I use a primer or an undercoat with your paints?
Yes, once surfaces are made sound, clean, dry and free from grease, we would always recommend that both new and previously painted surfaces are primed using a good quality primer (if in doubt seek help from a professional decorator) prior to paint application.
Can I touch-up the wall after the paint has been applied?
Factors such as lighting, different batches of material and varying sheen levels may highlight the touched-up areas, resulting in the repair not blending seamlessly with the existing finish. There may also be different methods of application between the original coating, usually achieved by a roller, and touched-up areas commonly undertaken using a brush. This may leave different textures and cause a build-up of layers, all contributing to the touched-up areas being visible. We would recommend re-painting a large area rather than touching-up to help to negate this.
Would there be a difference in colour between paint purchased on separate occasions?
Our paints are made to order, therefore, slight batch-to-batch variations in colour can occur. Best practice is to purchase the paint from one source at the same time and to mix tins together prior to use to ensure shade consistency.
How would you recommend I undertake a radical change in shade to ensure an even coverage?
Our paints are made to order, therefore, slight batch-to-batch variations in colour can occur. Best practice is to purchase the paint from one source at the same time and to mix tins together prior to use to ensure shade consistency.
How would you recommend I undertake a radical change in shade to ensure an even coverage?
Attempting a wide colour change can result in an uneven look to the coating. For the colour to achieve its full opacity and to achieve a seamless look, especially when covering a darker tone, we would suggest a minimum of two coats of the new shade be applied.
I used some of my elite emulsion paint, sealed the tin and then after two weeks went to use it again and it has a strange smell. Why is this?
There are several causes that can create an unpleasant odour, however, the most common cause is cross-contamination during use. This can lead to the introduction of bacteria to the paint which can affect the remaining paint over time . We recommend any paint with offensive odours be safely disposed of and new paint purchased.
Can your water-based eggshell paints be used on external metalwork, woodwork, or masonry?
Both our Sanderson and Zoffany Water Based Acrylic Eggshell paints can be used for exterior woodwork as long as they are suitably primed. The Sanderson Water Based Acrylic Eggshell is also suitable for exterior metalwork, again, as long as it is suitably primed. However, our Morris & Co. Water Based Acrylic Eggshell unfortunately is not suitable for any exterior use. We would also recommend specially formulated masonry paints are used for all stone/brickwork.
Which finish would you recommend for painting a wooden teak fire surround?
We would recommend Acrylic Eggshell for this purpose. We would also advise using a stain-blocking primer to prevent the chance of staining coming though and applying at least two coats of the selected topcoat.
Which paint to do you recommend for radiators?
Acrylic Eggshell is best on radiators as it more durable than the emulsion. If the radiator has an existing coat of paint, most likely white gloss, then it needs to be sanded down to provide a key for the undercoat prior to the topcoat being applied.
Are your paints suitable for use on a Lime Render (Breathable) surface?
We regret that they are not suitable due to the risk of flaking off. We recommend that you use truly breathable paint such as limewash for exterior or distemper for the interior.
Are your paints suitable for use around an open fire, are they flame-retardant?
None of our paints are fire retardant and are unfortunately not suitable for use around an open fire.
Will your Acrylic Eggshell paint cover a melamine surface (e.g., Kitchen cupboards)?
We would recommend our Acrylic Eggshell for a melamine surface. Please use an appropriate primer and two applications of the topcoat to achieve the best finish.
Why does the paint shade appear to change in different lighting?
Within a room, light conditions and quality of light may vary significantly. For example, halogen lighting produces a different look against natural light. Therefore, slight colour differences within a room can be experienced depending upon on-site influences.
My paint is flaking off the walls, what is the reason for this?
There are several factors that may cause this. These include but are not limited to; moisture within the surface, contamination, and incorrect preparation.
Are your paints washable?
Yes, the affected area can be cleaned with mild detergent using a soft, clean cloth or sponge in small circular motions to clean beyond the stain/soiled area. We would always recommend that the area is rinsed with clean water and gently dried with a clean, soft cloth, to leave the surface clean and free from smears. A thin layer of water may be left on the surface after cleaning, however once evaporated and dry, the colour will resume. However, any intense, localised cleaning can have the potential to polish or burnish the paints surface leaving a visible mark and so the application of a durable coating in high traffic areas is an alternative option to prevent this.
Why does the paint colour selected on the website look different once added to the basket?
The colour may appear to look different depending on your screen settings and the colours shown on the website are created using codes which relate to the paint colour. The images are not photos of the actual paint and so we would always recommend a sample pot is ordered for a true colour representation.
Do paint colours of the same shade differ across different paint finishes?
Colours across finishes are colour matched to be as close as possible.
What are the sheen levels of your paint?
Our Eggshell is about 20% in sheen and we would consider it to be a close match to what many other companies would call a satinwood.
Zoffany True Matt / Morris & Co. Chalky <3%
Zoffany Elite/Sanderson Active <6%
Morris & Co Eggshell 15%
Zoffany/Sanderson Eggshell 20%
Do you have a RAL Numbers or BS Numbers for your paints?
None of the Sanderson Design Group paint brands have RAL or BS numbers assigned to them as the paint and colours are exclusive to the brand.
What is the shelf life of your paints?
Providing they are stored at room temperature; unopened paint can be stored for up to two years. Once opened, paints may potentially undergo changes depending on the type of paint. For instance, with water-based paints, if dirty tools or equipment encounter the paint during use there is a potential for bacterial contamination and the spoiling of any unused paint.
Do your water-based paints contain fungicide?
- Both of our Morris & Co. paint finishes (Chalky Matt and Acrylic Eggshell), along with Zoffany True Matt do not contain fungicides.
- Zoffany Acrylic Eggshell, Zoffany Elite Emulsion and both Sanderson finishes (Acrylic Eggshell and Active Emulsion) do contain fungicides.
How much titanium dioxide is in your emulsion paint?
Quantities of titanium dioxide can vary depending on the chosen colour. Dark shades will have less than pastels or white shades, as this affects how deep the dark colours appear.
I am allergic to MIT/CMIT. Do your paints contain this?
Most water-based paints do contain a MIT/CMIT preservative package and so our paint should not be used.
Are the pigments in your paint natural (organic)?
The pigments used in our paints are both a mixture of organic (natural) and inorganic (synthetic) pigments.
Are SDG paints Vegan Friendly?
All our paints are Vegan Friendly, none of our paints are tested on animals and they contain no animal biproducts.
